” A man is rich in proportion to the things he can leave alone” Walt Whitman

I look for pearls of wisdom that resonate both with leading and living. This one really stuck with me. When I first heard it, I thought that is backwards. How can you leave things alone and be rich. So I started thinking about some of the areas that are troublesome for me, because as one of the titles in my book states, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” So let’s talk about eating. My health is richer when I leave certain foods alone. What about money? If I can leave a certain portion of my money alone, I will have more financial riches. If I do 10 minutes of my day sitting or kneeling in quiet and leave the noise off, my day is richer because I am more grounded and connected. If I can leave things off my schedule, my time is more available to spend with my husband and children. If I can leave others room to grow, I am richer because I can see the wonder unveiled in them.

Yes at first glance the quote seems opposite to the view of get all you can and get it now. But I hope that you are now able to see the rich life really is not about more instead it is direct proportion to what you leave alone.

Learn it, Live it.
